The Hilderstone Radio Society can deliver all levels of training. Training is free for members although there is a small exam fee to pay.

There are 3 levels of Amateur radio licence:

  • Foundation - Your first steps into becoming a licence holder and being able to use Amateur radio.
  • Intermediate - Gain experience and extra privileges such as being able to build your own equipment.
  • Full - Become a full licence holder and gain high power operation and the ability to use your licence around the world.

We run our courses using a supported self study method where our students can study at their own pace with the support of our instructors when required.

The Foundation licence can be done in very short time, around 10 - 12 hours and includes some short guided study sessions and some practical assessments. More information is available on the RSGB website - http://rsgb.org/main/clubs-training/for-students/foundation/

The Intermediate licence is slightly more technical and will require around 26 - 30 hours study time. Again, it includes some short guided study sessions and some practical assessments. More information is available on the RSGB website - http://rsgb.org/main/clubs-training/for-students/intermediate/

The Full licence becomes very technical and covers many subjects in depth. More information is available on the RSGB website - http://rsgb.org/main/clubs-training/for-students/advanced/

We recommend anyone wishing to do the Full licence to sign up to the Bath Based Distance Learning Course and use our tutors for assistance if they get stuck. The Bath Based Distance Learning Course is a very good course that has a fantastic track record. Full details can be obtained from Steve, G0FUW, from g0fuw@tiscali.co.uk.
